A New Beginning

I don’t pretend to be different from anyone else, especially when it comes to my love for autumn.

And guess what? It’s October. It’s October!

Though we all know autumn officially started last week, I’m sure I can get some of you to agree that nothing says autumn more than October. Well, at least here in the northern hemisphere, that is. If M. and I ever get assigned to a post south of the equator, you may find me writing this very same post about April… but I digress.

For most of my life, October has been the month of changing leaves, earlier sunsets, pumpkins, and candy corn. It’s also the month of crisp morning runs and the unofficial start to autumn marathon season. I usually spend eleven months anticipating the splendor of October, and this year has been no different. In fact, this October is particularly special because last year at this time in Matamoros, we were in the midst of what still felt very much like the peak of summer. By contrast, I awoke this morning to light rain and a cool breeze. Yellow and orange leaves dotted the trail as Frieda and I took our first October run together. She pulled me the entire way, spotting squirrels in the trees and stopping occasionally to shake the water off her coat. Clearly, she, too, was excited for the start of October.

Another thing that makes today special for me is the creation of my new (and hopefully improved) blog. I have spent the last few weeks building this new space, moving the content from my original blog, and expanding the site by incorporating a greater variety of photos, stories, and resources: a section on food to include recipes and highlight some of our favorite meals from around the world; a section on running to share some of my favorite running spots, races, and workouts; and a travel section which will include photo galleries and anecdotes from places near and far. Although the new blog is still very much a work in progress, and some pieces are not quite ready for presentation, today seemed fitting to share it, because for me, October 1st is the start of my favorite time of year.

To those of you who have been loyal readers of my blog, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued support. If you are stopping by for the first time, thank you for taking the time to visit. I hope you will come back again soon and I welcome your honest feedback as I continue to work on the site.

Meanwhile, what about you? What is your favorite thing about autumn?

I wish you a happy October, complete with colorful leaves, crisp mornings, pumpkins and candy corn.

Thank you for reading!

Happy October!

Happy October!

  1. I loved October when I lived in Virginia. But here in Minnesota, October means winter is practically here. It was 41 degrees yesterday morning! Ugh! But also I have to add that maybe you think of October 1 as the start of the year because a part of you is still tied to the federal fiscal year? 🙂 Anyway, I love that you will be continuing to blog! I love your writing, as always!

    • Thank you so much, Kara! Yes, I definitely remember October in Minnesota… the air is brisker and frost starts appearing. I love that you continue to bike through it. I was always too much of a wimp for that. What I did love about October in Minnesota was the excuse to start up the fireplace that early in the year. And I think you are right- maybe subconsciously October is so nice because federal work always slowed down a little bit! 🙂

  2. Love the new website. So beautiful! I’m an autumn fan as well although I don’t like what follows. I just love crunching through the leaves, all the beautiful fall colors, carving pumpkins, and the coziness that comes with this season. It’s cool enough for a sweater but not so cold that I can’t drink my coffee on the patio. Hope your new spot is lovely in the fall.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words, Cat! I’m with you in that I don’t always appreciate winter (though I did in Mexico!), but autumn always makes it worth it, I think. Hope you are enjoying fall in Des Moines. I miss you!

  3. Autumn hasn’t quite reached texas yet, although we have had a few breezy days. I am so glad that it is cooling down here though cause this year I can’t take the heat especially with me having my own orbit. This is Justin ‘ s favorite time of year and I feel like we waited extra long for it to get here. This is our first autumn in Texas and so far so good. I am really trying to enjoy it however school is proving to be very challenging with baby brain. Love reading your blog Deena. Love you.

    • Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Brittany! I am glad the weather in Texas is finally cooling off. And I’m so glad that Justin is there with you! I know school is tough now, but there is an end in sight, despite how it may feel now. I’m so excited for Baby Girl’s arrival and can’t wait to see pictures! Thanks again for visiting my blog. Love you, too! 🙂
